Kiwanis, through guidance and example, works to develop future generations of leaders. Every day Kiwanians are revitalizing neighborhoods, organizing youth programs, tutoring, building playgrounds and taking part in countless other projects to help children and communities. North Shore Kiwanis is responsible for the Sea Cliff Mini-Mart, Pancake Breakfast, Klothes for Kids, the Juvenile Diabetes Walk, Lacrosse Day, and also plays a major part in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life.”
The North Shore Kiwanis Club holds a dinner meeting at the Swan Club in Glenwood Landing every Thursday at 7:15 PM. For additional information e-mail President Julia Salat at salatjulia@gmail.com.
This annual event takes place each April at the Harry Tappan Beach and Boat Basin located on Shore Road in Glenwood Landing, NY.
This year will mark the 12th anniversary of a ride that is called one of the best on Long Island by many veteran cyclists. The ride offers a 100K (62 mile loop), a 50 mile loop and a 25 mile loop. The ride hugs the coast line of the North Shore with amazing views of the northwest coast of Long Island from Tappan Beach to Huntington and back. The longer rides have 4 rest stops that are manned by the friendly and helpful folks from the North Shore Kiwanis and North Shore High School Key Club. The riders are greeted with fresh bagels, music, and fruit in the morning along with many other great treats (all free). All rest stops offer healthy food and drinks for the riders.
This ride has the support and approval of the Town of Oyster Bay as well as the Nassau County, Brookville, and Suffolk County police forces. We also have support from the Sea Cliff EMS, and the fire departments of Sea Cliff and Oyster Bay. The ride is truly a Long Island event. Our sponsors include Tower Ford, Mr. Jay, Dianne’s Bakery and many more. Upon their return, riders are treated to pasta dishes prepared by Abeetza Restaurant of Greenvale.
Money raised helps support the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center (KPTC) located at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Pediatric trauma is one of the leading causes of death in young children. To date, this ride has donated over $45,000 to the KPTC. The ride also provides funds to help defray the cost of training the pediatric staff, provide education to our schools and to help buy aspiration kits for children who have been involved in serious accidents. The kits are given to fire departments and EMS teams. Each kit costs approximately $700.
